Blog 1: Mindset Makeover Monday 6.24.24
Discussion Question: What belief(s) from childhood is still sabotaging you in adulthood?
Let’s identify the Mindsets!
In Belief Therapy, we realize that: We as people “Do” what we “Do” because we “Believe” what we “Believe”! Whether our beliefs are “True” or “False”
BELIEVE (defined) —the thought that you hold firmly to and accept as Truth regarding a specific situation.
Let’s Identify the “key” MINDSET:
These “beliefs” begin to subconsciously shape our mindset, affecting our thoughts, words, actions, and ultimately our decisions.
Soon, those beliefs connect with our hearts and become the pillar and foundation on which our faith is built – whether they are true or false.
When those Beliefs are anchored in a LIE they will prevent or limit you from living the life that God intended for you.
A thought or state of mind that you believe is the absolute truth, limiting you in various ways.
They can be “beliefs” formed because of childhood trauma, experiences, lies or misconceptions.
My Limiting Belief from My Childhood
As a kid, I felt like a misfit (as if I was born at 5’10”) - I chuckled at the visual 🤣It wasn’t long before I grew taller than both of my parents, although my 3 older brothers were always taller than me.
I couldn’t find fashionable pants for my height back then was exhausting and nearing impossible
I felt punished by God as a result because, throughout elementary school, we did “EVERYTHING” according to height (shortest to tallest) – line up for lunch, field trips, extracurricular activities, recess………
As far back as I can remember, I wore size 10 shoes. Imagine trying to find a young girl or preteen in-style shoe in size 10 in the late ’60s to ’70s.
I was taller than almost all of the boys in my class and all except 1 teacher throughout my 9 years of school, from kindergarten to 8th grade. It was hard out in them streets for a tall young girl back then. J
My LIMITING BELIEF: I’m so different from my peers/I just don’t fit in - (The LIE I BELIEVED)
My MINDSET: Inadequacy
As human beings, we ABSOLUTELY follow through on who WE BELIEVE we are or what WE BELIEVE about our circumstances.
Whatever identity we accept as TRUTH of ourselves – is attached to us! It is what we LIVE!
Our brain will become wired to KEEP us there – EVEN IF IT WASN’T OUR ORIGINAL INTENTION!
OUTCOME
For years, my subconscious clung to the same old story: finding pants that fit my height was nearly impossible. I never bothered to challenge this lie and replace it with the truth. As I matured, this narrative didn't bother me much, but it still lingered in my heart, and it was exposed while working on this book.
I hated my height until after high school when I started focusing on fitness and flourishing, and my height actually became an advantage with great perks (especially in my short-lived clubbing days).
Fashion may have evolved, but I was stuck in the past with the residue of that belief tucked away, convinced that pants for tall people were unicorns. Then, my friends, the fashionistas, told me about fashion influencers they followed, which revealed a world of options, both online and in stores, that cater to tall folks like me. Who knew!?!? All this time, I settled for just a few basic color pairs of pants that I styled with various top options!
RESOLVE
(Be INTENTIONAL in pursuing TRUTH) – Our “Beliefs” MUST align with the “TRUTH” of the word of God
TRUTH – PSALM 13913-14 NIV
13 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made, your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
ACTION
MEDITATE on the Truth (CONTINUOUSLY), SPEAK it, AND LISTEN to it until it connects from mind to your heart!
